has been supposed to combine the flavor of cinnamon, nutmegs, and cloves;
and hence the name. The name is also given to other aromatic shrubs; as,
the Carolina allspice (Calycanthus floridus); wild
allspice (Lindera benzoin), called also spicebush,
spicewood, and feverbush.
